VPN Renewal Prices Compared: What You Pay After Year One

Go with CyberGhost if you'll keep a VPN past its first term, because its long plan renews at $51.74 a year, the same charge as its first bill, by eCommerce Paradise's count. Its 6-month and monthly plans renew at the rate they started at.

Pound prices and ratings in the table come from The VPN Advisor's own comparison data, checked in September and October 2026.

Year-one prices for two VPNs on 12-month plans

Provider A month on the 12-month plan A year on that plan The VPN Advisor's rating
NordVPN £4.09 £49.08 4.4 stars
ExpressVPN £3.99 £47.88 4.5 stars

NordVPN fixes one renewal price per tier

NordVPN's checkout page lists the 1-year Basic plan at $4.39 a month, billed as $52.68 for the year and renewing at $139.08 a year. ComparEdge finds each tier's renewal fixed, whichever prepaid term you started on. Its figures have Complete Max renewing at $301.08 a year and Complete at $219.48 a year. Twelve month-to-month payments of $21.99 come to $263.88, ComparEdge adds, less than that Complete Max renewal. It also notes that the $94.23 first bill for 27 months of Basic and its renewal are both figures before tax.

On vpnoverview's figures, Plus renews at $179.88 a year, and Complete's renewal works out at $18.29 a month. eCommerce Paradise has Basic going from $3.49 a month to $11.59 a month at renewal, a rise of 232 percent. It puts the rise on Complete at 307 percent and on Prime at 230 percent. Awebanalysis ties that $3.49 a month to the two-year Basic plan, 27 months long under the current promotion.

Auto-renewal starts switched on, vpnoverview notes, so the standard rate is what you pay at the end of the term unless you cancel first. VPN Online reports that the company sends existing customers offers that can bring the renewal down a long way. Rates change from time to time, so it suggests checking your account dashboard before the term ends.

ExpressVPN tells you 30 days before it renews

ExpressVPN's pricing page bills Basic at $69.72 for the first 28 months of its two-year plan, then renews it automatically at $99.95 a year. Advanced renews automatically at $119.95 a year after those 28 months, by the same page, with Pro at $199.95 a year. Gizmodo works the three renewals out at $8.33, $10.00 and $16.66 a month.

eCommerce Paradise has Basic rising 179 percent at renewal, from $2.99 a month to $8.33 a month. It puts the rise for Advanced and Pro at about 122 percent each. Its sums also give Basic an average of $4.59 a month over the first 40 months.

Gizmodo adds that ExpressVPN sends the renewal figure at least 30 days before your term ends. New users get a 30-day money-back guarantee, shown beside every plan on the order page. PCrisk's review collects complaints that the renewal is pricey, especially for anyone who missed a discount on the first term.

Surfshark keeps the amount off its pricing page

eCommerce Paradise found no renewal amount on Surfshark's pricing page, only a line in its FAQ about an applicable renewal price. Billing turns annual once the first 27 months are over, the same review adds. Starter costs $67.23 for those 27 months, after which Sonary's review has $2.49 a month becoming $6.58 a month.

Gizmodo puts the renewal at $79 a year for Starter, $99 a year for One and $119 a year for One+. VPN Scout's renewal report, built from 22 providers' official pages in July 2026, has the month-to-month plan at $16.45 a month, 6.6 times the advertised rate.

Every Surfshark subscription renews by itself at the standard rate once the first term ends unless you cancel, vpnoverview reports. Gizmodo notes that its renewal prices are worked out before tax, so they can differ by country. PCrisk's review suggests setting a reminder to weigh your options before the 24-month plan renews.

CyberGhost renews its long plan for the same charge

eCommerce Paradise has CyberGhost at $1.99 a month for 26 months. Renewed, the same charge covers 12 months, or $4.31 a month. That makes a 117 percent rise. Even so, the review puts the renewal at 52 percent of ExpressVPN's. NordVPN Basic renews at $139.08 a year on its count. PureVPN Standard renews lower still, at $47.95 a year. CyberGhost's own page, quoted in eCommerce Paradise's ExpressVPN guide, says its two-year plan autorenews each year.

CyberGhost's long plan for anyone staying past year one

Pick CyberGhost's long plan if you'll stay past the first term, since its renewal undercuts ExpressVPN's. Its long plans also come with 45 days to ask for your money back, against 14 on the monthly plan.

ExpressVPN suits a buyer who wants warning before each renewal and a money-back window on a new plan. NordVPN suits one who will cancel inside the first term, since auto-renewal starts switched on.

Surfshark suits a buyer who will set a reminder before the first term ends, since its pricing page leaves the renewal amount out.
