  • No double VPN, port forwarding, or GUI Linux client.

Overview

ExpressVPN is the conservative, premium-priced choice for users who want a long audit trail, dependable streaming, and a track record of standing up to government pressure. It suits travellers, journalists, and anyone who values verified privacy claims over feature breadth or low monthly cost. The jurisdictional case is unusually strong.

Operating from the British Virgin Islands means no mandatory data-retention laws and no membership of the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. That legal backbone has been tested in the real world. When Turkish authorities seized an ExpressVPN server in January 2017 during the investigation into the assassination of Russian ambassador Andrei Karlov, they recovered no user activity records — the no-logs claim survived contact with a state actor.

Every server runs in RAM-only TrustedServer mode, so nothing is written to disk and each reboot wipes the system clean. Independent auditors have verified the no-logs policy 23 times since 2018, with KPMG completing its third TrustedServer assessment in February 2025 under the ISAE 3000 standard. Performance and unblocking are where ExpressVPN earns its price.

Reviewers consistently report reliable access to Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and more than 90 other platforms, with Tom's Guide measuring 840 Mbps on a 940 Mbps UK line during BBC iPlayer playback. The proprietary Lightway protocol — rewritten in Rust and audited by Cure53 in 2024 — delivered 718 Mbps in Seattle, 612 Mbps in New York, and 551 Mbps in London during 2026 testing.

A post-quantum WireGuard variant rolled out in August 2025. The drawbacks are real. ExpressVPN is one of the priciest mainstream providers — roughly $8.32 per month on the 12-month plan, against $3.59 for NordVPN and $1.99 on Surfshark's 24-month plan.

Ownership is also a sticking point: parent Kape Technologies was previously named Crossrider, which a 2015 UC Berkeley and Google study identified as a major ad-injector affiliate. Kape rebranded in 2018 and acquired ExpressVPN for $936 million in September 2021, which leaves some privacy advocates uncomfortable.

Trustpilot reviewers repeatedly flag auto-renewal billing surprises, including a case where the service charged $116.95 for an unauthorised two-year renewal, and a UI that lets users disable auto-renew but not cancel outright. Feature coverage is thinner than rivals — no double VPN, no Tor-over-VPN, no port forwarding, no dedicated IPs on the Basic plan, and the Linux client is command-line only.

The base plan supports just 8 simultaneous connections. Choose ExpressVPN if a verified audit trail and proven real-world resistance to seizure outweigh price and feature gaps. If you want unlimited devices, port forwarding, or open-source clients, Surfshark or ProtonVPN are better fits.
